The Da Vinci Code

SOLVED - follow the jump for the solution

I am sure that between the tours in France, and the movie hype you are getting sick of hearing about The Da Vinci Code, but I have one more for you. As you may have heard, a pair of authors (Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh) claimed that Dan Brown plagiarized from their book, and sued him for it. The judgment in the case was released, and people noticed that random letters were italicized.

Turns out, the judge in the case (Justice Peter Smith) created his own code for people to decipher. Now there are a number of variations of what those italicized letters are, so I have included a PDF of the judgment so that you can pull out the letters yourself if you wish.

User manuals

Every once in a while I will pick a used something or other, and really wish I had the manual for it. This site has a ton of manuals in pdf format for free. The manuals are listed by manufacturer, and then by product type. If you are looking for an old manual, this is a great first stop

What is this?

Well, apparently, I swung to the other spectrum this week. Last week was too easy, and this week was too hard.

The answer to this weeks quiz was: drum roll Sock Cops - used to keep socks paired together in the wash.

I promise next week’s quiz will not be laundry related.

P(LOT)

Michael Rakowitz is know for his controversial uses of public space, and P(LOT) is no exception. Taking the notion that a parking space could be rented for other uses, like say a temporary encampment, Michael has designed tents from car covers to help make them blend in. The covers are available for loan from MUMOK if you want to give it a go.

The Politically Incorrect Alphabet

The long and short of the story is that, this gentleman spent a great deal of time in his wife’s class room, staring at the pictures of the typical illustrations of alphabet letters, thinking back to his own childhood, and remarking on how a number of the illustrations have changed due to political correctness. So, it a fit of creativity, he began work on the non-politically correct alphabet.

Mandala

Main Entry: man·da·la
Pronunciation: ‘m&n-d&-l&
Function: noun
Etymology: Sanskrit mandala circle
1 : a Hindu or Buddhist graphic symbol of the universe; specifically : a circle enclosing a square with a deity on each side

Once a year, at Bastyr University, here in Seattle, buddhist monks come and create a mandala. I have not yet had the opportunity to see its creation, and subsequent destruction, so I offer this.

Microsoft is coming in

Last night, (if you have updates turned on) Microsoft installed a bit of software that is now scanning your machine to see if you have valid license, and reporting back to Microsoft, all without user intervention.
