A bug in Microsoft’s Excel 2007 causes it to do some funny math. Try entering one of the formulas below into a cell, then check the math on your own calculator.

• =5.1*12850
• =850*77.1

The good news is that it is a display issue and not a calculation issue. If you take the result an multiply it by 2 in another cell, you will get the correct answer. As a web developer, it is often important to be able to view a site in multiple browsers. Microsoft has made this difficult to do since installing IE7 replaces IE6. I have found a most brilliant work around, so I thought I would share.

The fantastic people at TredoSoft have created an install package for IE7 that is a standalone. That means you can have both IE6 and IE7 running on one machine!

There are lots of tools that you can use to track browsing habits, but few are as interesting as Packet Garden. The program monitors your browsing, and uses that information to render a world which you can explore. None of the information is shared, or exported, or even detailed for that matter. So, the fact that you visited teenagenymphos.com can remain your secret.

To do this, Packet Garden takes note of all the servers you visit, their geographical location and the kinds of data you access. Uploads make hills and downloads valleys, their location determined by numbers taken from internet address itself. The size of each hill or valley is based on how much data is sent or received. Plants are also grown for each protocol detected by the software; if you visit a website, an ‘HTTP plant’ is grown. If you share some files via eMule, a ‘Peer to Peer plant’ is grown, and so on.

It is finally here. It may or may not be earth shatering, but RC3 was better than IE7 in my opinion. Here is a list of the new features in FF2.0

Tabbed browsing.

Firefox popularized tabbed browsing, enabling multiple Web sites to be viewed as separate tabs contained within a single browser window, and improving people’s efficiency by helping them better organize their desktops. In Firefox 2, tabbed browsing has been further improved with the addition of individual close buttons on each tab, enhanced tab navigation features, and a session restore system that automatically restores previously-open windows and tabs when a new browsing session is started.

Spell checking

Modern Web sites are increasingly complex with the rollout of new, rich Internet applications, such as word processors, spreadsheets and blogging tools. Inline spell checking in Firefox 2 automatically checks for spelling errors and suggests corrections as users interact with Web sites, bringing a common desktop feature to the Web.

Search

Search is one of the most frequently used features of the Web. With Firefox 2, Mozilla improves the browser’s integrated search capabilities, making it even easier for users to find the information they are looking for. The new Search Suggestions feature dynamically updates a drop-down list of suggested search terms as users enter text into the search bar for Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines.

Web feeds

Firefox users can now take better advantage of the frequently updated content offered by Web sites, with increased options for handling Web feeds. Users now see a preview of the content being offered and are given the option to subscribe to a feed as a Live Bookmark, using a Web service such as Bloglines, My Yahoo!, or Google Reader, or with a desktop application.

How do you define Ironic? I would define it by the fact that CNET list their favorite Firefox extentions on a webpage that doesn’t work in Firefox. The page is viewable in IE, but the CSS breaks in Firefox.

Anyway, the list is good, and definitely worth checking out if you are a user of Firefox. I think I would start with the IE tab extention …
