Quantity vs Quality

This is a great article about digital cameras, and the race for higher and higher pixel counts. You may not be getting the higher quality you were hoping for..

A digital camera with 12 million pixels is better than one with 6 million. ‘That is correct’ is what you would probably say because you’ve always heard more pixels are better.

It’s not true(!!!), we have to say when it comes to compact cameras. We, the staff of Image Engineering which is an independent testing laboratory that, amongst other things, tests digital camera for the German magazines Color Photo and c’t. Quite a while ago we noticed that the image quality of digital cameras was getting worse instead of better. The reason is that today’s sensors are divided into more and therefore smaller pixels. We want to clarify the consequences on this website.

Chetwood Associates - Wind Dam

Just like it sounds, the wind dam blocks a funnels the wind into a turbine, therefore creating a sustainable source of power. The jury is still out on its overall environmental impact, as well as its efficiency, but over all the project has some very exciting implications.

Scary

A bug in Microsoft’s Excel 2007 causes it to do some funny math. Try entering one of the formulas below into a cell, then check the math on your own calculator.

  • =5.1*12850
  • =850*77.1

The good news is that it is a display issue and not a calculation issue. If you take the result an multiply it by 2 in another cell, you will get the correct answer. It all relates to programing language that Excel is written in, and unsigned 16bit numbers. Not much info could be found on the Microsoft website at this time, but as you can imagine, digg

Production Line Built From Legos Builds Lego Cars

When I was a kid, my favorite toys were Legos. Many a rainy day was spent building planes and spaceships, supercars and battleships, medieval castles and futuristic moon bases. But I never made anything like this. Constructed using Lego’s Mindstorm Robots, this is an autonomous production line capable of building Lego cars. It can even select the color of the blocks used. Consider my little Lego geek mind blown.

USB 3.0

Do you find that USB 2.0 is not really meeting your needs, and are thinking about making the change to firewire? You might want to wait it out a bit. USB 2.0 has data transfer speeds of 480Mb/s; where firewire is at 800Mb/s. Intel is working with other companies to release USB 3.0 in mid 2008. It is showing promising speeds of 4.8Gb/s!
