How many planets

If everyone on earth lived as you did, how many planets would be required to sustain us. Apparently I take up 11 acres of ‘biologically productive’ land. That is about half of what my fellow countrymen (and women) use, but still leaves us a planet and a half short.

Sewerpipe Hotel

Nicer than it sounds..
The site had a tough time staying in English, so I don’t have many details for you, other than it would be a memorable nights stay.

Wind Pavillion

As a lightweight fabric structure, the wind slowly and randomly rotates each of the six segments around a central open support frame. This continually alters the shape of the pavilion, while at the same time generating electrical power for its nighttime illumination.

This would be an amazing site to see. Be sure to check out his other projects as well.

E-Rope

In a word: modular.
E-Rope can be configured to fit your exact needs, whether it is a few outlets or many. It can also accommodate as many power-bricks as you can through at it. One of the unique features is that an individual socket can be switched off by rotating it 90 degrees!

The Rubber Highway

A congestion-beating project that could lead to some of the UK’s 9,000 miles (14,500km) of disused railway being paved with rubber, has been launched.

The flexible highways are made of panels of shredded car tyres laid over the existing tracks.

New thoroughfares could be shared by both cars and trams travelling at up to 50mph (80km/h) say Holdfast, the company behind the scheme.

Nothing scary about having a multi-ton train cruising behind you at 50 mph!

Super Bus

Dutch is not my strong point, and apparently, it is not Babelfish’s either. From what I can gather, the superbus is the next generation in travel for the Dutch. The system will use a combination of the internet and cellphones to aggregate people with similar destinations, and provide point to point travel.

P(LOT)

Michael Rakowitz is know for his controversial uses of public space, and P(LOT) is no exception. Taking the notion that a parking space could be rented for other uses, like say a temporary encampment, Michael has designed tents from car covers to help make them blend in. The covers are available for loan from MUMOK if you want to give it a go.

Towards the magnetic fridge

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a material that gives a whole new complexion to the term ‘fridge magnet’. When this alloy is placed in a magnetic field, it gets colder.

Which translates into a 40% energy savings on keeping your cold things cold.

Second chunk of ice falls from cloudless sky in SF

For the second time in a week, California was the victim of an aerial, icy assault, the latest being early Thursday when a chunk of ice the size of a microwave oven plunged out of a cloudless sky into the San Bernardino County town of Loma Linda. The ice punched through the metal roof of a recreation center, leaving a hole up to 2 1/2 feet wide, then fragmented into opaque, brilliant white chunks, one as big as a bowling ball. No one was hurt.
