Guerrilla bike lanes

Standing beside two parked cars, two men in dark baseball hats wait for the signal.

It’s broad daylight and nearly rush hour on Bloor. A woman in paint-stained jeans sprints ahead of the men, scanning the street. Another stations herself across the road, surveying the speeding cars for police. The thumbs-up sign is given.

The painting can begin.

Seconds later, a cardboard bike stencil is thrown on the road and the first of seven cans of hot pink paint is emptied on a stretch of Bloor St. W.

“Putting in a bike lane?” asks a teenage girl cycling by.

Rotor Cranks

Rotor is an innovative pedalling system that eliminates the dead point. The dead point of conventional pedalling is the void that occurs when the pedals are vertically positioned (one at the top and the other at the bottom), which is a moment at which neither leg can transmit any power.

Rotor makes the cranks independent in such a way that they are not aligned at a fixed 180º, but rather the angle between them varies during the cycle in such a way that one pedal never coincides with the one below, thus avoiding power vacuums.
Such an effect is achieved by the use of independent cranks that are synchronised by means of an exocentric axel and two rods, which vary the development during the cycle and adapt to the muscle power of the legs at all times.

The jury is still out as far as I am concerned. I would definately need to ride them before I could make a final decision, but the concept is intriguing, and I always love to see new bike innovations. Be sure to check out the animations of it’s movement

Nano Tech - BMS SLC01

Finally! The first really application of nano-technology for practical uses. The BMC SLC01 uses carbon nanotubes in its frame construction, helping to make it one of the lightest, stiffest frames on the market. What?, you don’t believe me? The SLC01 weighs in at 2.11lbs (960 grams)!
