How To: Slice an onion without crying

Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don’t put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you’re chopping it up. Once you’ve gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

You know your cone is too small if it doesn’t work, because you’ve cut into that teargas grenade.

    Hey Plat, If this works it is because you are discarding the most aromatic ( and presumably most flavorful part of the onion) A better solution is to chill the onion to reduce the volatility of these aromatics. Less tears more flavor

    I have tried that method with varying results. Your point is a good one. I guess the only solution is still to grin and bear it.

    The other solution is to cut your onion in close proximity to running water, i.e., over the sink. 9 times out of 10 it will keep you from crying– as its the moisture in your eye that the gas is attracted to.

    I knew about the root, but don’t want to discard it! I slice teh root end under running water, adn let it rinse long enough to get rid of the worse juice from that end. What aroma is left I rather enjoy!

    As a side note, to get that oniony smell from your hands, touch stainless steel. (the faucet is a good, close choice) Works every time.

    The best single thing I’ve discovered is a knife with a good edge.
    i got a ceramic knife as a gift- super sharp, goes through onions, garlic whatever - basically without mashing up all kinds of cell walls, releasing the contents.
    we can do lots of onions now with jno tears….
