The Da Vinci Code

SOLVED - follow the jump for the solution

I am sure that between the tours in France, and the movie hype you are getting sick of hearing about The Da Vinci Code, but I have one more for you. As you may have heard, a pair of authors (Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh) claimed that Dan Brown plagiarized from their book, and sued him for it. The judgment in the case was released, and people noticed that random letters were italicized.

Turns out, the judge in the case (Justice Peter Smith) created his own code for people to decipher. Now there are a number of variations of what those italicized letters are, so I have included a PDF of the judgment so that you can pull out the letters yourself if you wish.

The technique that I used was the following:

  • Copy the entire contents into a Word document
  • Use the ‘Find function’; Select ‘More’; then ‘Fonts’; and check ‘Italic”. This Highlighted all the italicized letters in the document.
  • I then copied those to a new document, and removed all the blocks of text that were in italics, which left the following letters:
  • s mithy codeJaeiextos tg psacg reamqwf kadpmqzvin

Digg, Slashdot, Fark, and a number of other sites have been working on it, but as of this post, no one has solved it. Will you be first?
