In the USA, Highway speeds are governed by each State, and can even vary by city. If I drive South, from Seattle, to say, Eugene, Oregon (about a 300 mile drive) even though I stay on the say highway (Interstate-5), The speed limit will vary from a low of 55mph to a high of 70mph. Generally speaking though, I would have to say the safest speed to drive is just with the flow of traffic. If you are blowing peoples doors off passing them, you are going too fast. If you are getting your doors blown off, speed up.

I think the one main advantage the Europe has over the US in highway driving is the use of flashing highbeams. People in the US either don't get it, or get pissed off when you flash them.

I'm from Germany and here it's pretty much the same as in Portugal with one or two slight differences. In the cities the speed limit is 50km/h, on the interstates 100km/h. On the highways the recommended speed is 130km/h for safety reasons and insurance policies. The fun part is, that you don't have to keep to this recommended speed. If you feel like it you can drive as fast as your car goes but even if you drive 200km/h(125mph) or faster, you get passed at least every minute. I really can't imagine what it's like to drive 55mph(88km/h) on a highway. So if you wanna have fun on the highway visit Germany. Good slogan, isn't it;)? I think we're one of the few countries where there's no general speed limit on the highways. There are also disadvantages but mentioning them would take far too long.

In diesem Sinne, schön langsam fahren. Tschüs

I live in Portugal ( no it´s not part of Spain), the law here says that in highways the speed limit is 120Km/h outside highways is 90Km/h and in cities is 50Km/h, inside cities i believe is ok to have low speed limits, but in highways almost everybody goes at average speeds of 150Km/h, and outside highways usualy 100 to 120Km/h depending on the road. I belive the speed limits outside highways are ok but in highways the 120 limit it´s absurd!!
